Sermon:Divine Vengeance

 WHAT DOES DIVINE VENGEANCE MEAN?

▪︎Punishment for wrongdoing,against those who have harmed others or rejected God's authority.

▪︎God's ultimate judgment and punishment of those who have committed evil or rebellion against Him. 

 ▪︎Divine vengeance is seen as a manifestation of God's justice and wrath, as well as His desire to maintain His holiness and righteousness in the face of human sin. 

▪︎God's vengeance is seen as a form of divine justice that will be executed in His perfect timing and manner, ensuring fairness and ultimate restoration.

•Divine vengeance refers to the concept of God’s righteous punishment or judgment against sin, wrongdoing, or rebellion. 

•Divine vengeance is the belief that God, in His justice and holiness, will right the wrongs committed by individuals, especially against those who have been oppressed or harmed.

THE HUMAN DESIRE FOR VENGEANCE 

The human desire for vengeance often arises from feelings of hurt, anger, and injustice. When people are wronged or harmed, they may experience a deep emotional response that drives them to seek retribution.

 This desire for revenge can stem from a need to restore personal dignity, balance, or fairness, as individuals may feel that their sense of justice has been violated. People often believe that revenge will bring closure or alleviate their emotional pain. However, the pursuit of vengeance can sometimes lead to a cycle of conflict, prolonging hurt rather than healing, and can be influenced by a desire for power or control over the wrongdoer.

BIBLICAL VIEW ON VENGEANCE 

▪︎God’s vengeance is Just: God repays in accordance with truth and righteousness, not partiality or favoritism.

-Psalm 96:13,"For He is coming,for He is coming to judge the earth.He shall judge the world with righteousness,and the peoples with His truth. "

▪︎ God's vengeance is Patient:God waits for repentance before executing judgment, offering grace and mercy to all. 

-2 Peter 3:9,"The Lord is not slack concerning His promise,as some count slackness,but is long-suffering toward us,not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance."

▪︎Vengeance belongs to the Lord:God alone has the right to execute judgment(Psalm 94:1,Romans 12:19)

-Psalm 94:1,"O Lord God,to whom vengeance belongs- O God,to whom vengeance belongs,shine forth."

-Romans 12:19,"Beloved,do not avenge yourselves....."Vengeance is mine,I will repay,"says the Lord."

▪︎Vengeance belongs to God, and He will repay those who do evil in His perfect timing.

-Deuteronomy 32:35,"Vengeance is mine,and recompense;Their foot shall slip in due time;For the day of their calamity is at hand,and the things to come hasten upon them."

▪︎God is the ultimate judge, wielding His sword in vengeance against His enemies.

-Deuteronomy 32:41,"If i whet my glittering sword,and my hand takes hold on judgment,I will render vengeance to my enemies,and repay those who hate me."

▪︎God will avenge the blood of His servants, render vengeance to His  adversaries,and bring justice to the land and His people.

-Deuteronomy 32:43,"Rejoice,O Gentiles, with His people,For He will avenge the blood of His servants,and render vengeance to His adversaries;He will provide atonement for His land and His people."

▪︎God takes vengeance on any wrong act or deed:While God is forgiving,He also disciplines His people and enacts judgment on wrongdoers. 

-Psalm 99:8,"You answered them,O Lord our God;you were to them God- who forgives,Though you took vengeance on their deeds."

▪︎God's vengeance is also associated with salvation, as He will come to deliver His people from their enemies.The Lord will come with vengeance and will save you.

-Isaiah 35:4,"Say to those who are fearful-hearted,"Be strong,do not fear! Behold,your God will come with vengeance,with recompense of God;He will come and save you."

▪︎The day of vengeance is in the heart of the Lord:His justice will come when the time is right.

-Isaiah 63:4,"For the day of vengeance is in my heart..."

▪︎God will avenge Himself on His adversaries on the day of vengeance

-Jeremiah 46:10,"For this is the day of the Lord God of hosts,A day of vengeance, That He may avenge Himself on His adversaries.."

▪︎The Lord will execute great vengeance with furious rebukes upon those who take vengeance spitefully and destroy others because of old hatred.

-Ezekiel 25:15-17,"Thus says the Lord God:" Because the philistines dealt vengefully and took vengeance with a spiteful heart,to destroy because of the old hatred.....I will execute great vengeance on them with furious rebukes;and they shall know that I am the Lord,when I lay my vengeance upon them."

▪︎The Almighty God executes vengeance in anger and fury on evil nations:God's vengeance is also directed at nations that disobey Him.

-Micah 5:15,"And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury on the nations that have not heard."

▪︎God is both avenging and wrathful toward His enemies.The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries.

-Nahum1:2,"God is jealous,and the Lord avenges;The Lord avenges and is furious. The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries,and He reserves his wrath for His enemies. "

▪︎The Lord will take vengeance on those who do not know God,and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

-2 Thessalonians 1:8,"In flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God,and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ."

▪︎God warns of His vengeance when His people break the covenant, demonstrating that His judgment is a consequence of disobedience.

-Leviticus 26:25,"And I will bring a sword against you that will execute the vengeance of the covenant. When you are gathered together within your cities, I will send pestilence among you, and you shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.”

▪︎God’s vengeance is against those who commit evil, only Him can justly repay wrongdoers.

-2 Samuel 3:39,"And today I am weak, though anointed king;and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too harsh for me.The Lord shall repay the evildoer according to his wickedness."

EXAMPLES OF REVENGE IN THE BIBLE 

▪︎Jacob’s sons revenged over the rape of their sister,Dinah.(Genesis 34:1-31)

-Genesis 34:25,"Now it came to pass on the third day,when they were in pain,that two of the sons of Jacob,Simeon and Levi,Dinah's brothers,each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males."

▪︎Samson’s revenge for giving his wife to his friend.(Judges 15:1-8)

-Judges 15;7-8,"Samson said to them,"Since you would do a thing like this,I will surely revenge on you,and after that I will cease.So he attacked them hip and thigh with a great slaughter..."

▪︎Samson’s revenge on those that plucked out his eyes.(Judges 16:21-30)

-Judges 16:28,"Then Samson called to the Lord,saying,"O Lord God,remember me,I pray! Strengthen me,I pray,just this once,O God,that I may with one blow take vengeance on the philistines for my two eyes!"

▪︎Joab’s revenge on Abner for the death of Asahel his brother.

-2 Samuel 3:27,"Now when Abner had returned to Hebron,Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him privately,and there stabbed him in the stomach,so that he died for the blood of Asahel his brother.

▪︎Absalom’s revenge on Amnon for defiling Tamar.(2 Samuel 13:1-33)

-2 Samuel 13:28,"Now Absalom had commanded his servants,saying,"Watch now,when Amnon's heart is merry with wine,and when I say to you,'Strike Amnon! then kill him."

▪︎Jezebel’s revenge attempt on Elijah for executing the prophets of Baal.(1 Kings 19:1-2)

-1 Kings 19:2,"And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done,also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword.Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah,saying,"So let the gods do to me,and more also,if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time."

▪︎The Chief Priest and High priest’s attempt to kill the disciples of Jesus for preaching the gospel.(Acts 5:27-33)

-Acts 5:33,"When they heard this,they were furious and plotted to kill them."

▪︎The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah serves as an example of divine vengeance against sinful cities.

-Jude 1:7,"As Sodom and Gomorrah,and the cities around them in a similar manner to these,having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh,are set forth as an example,suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. "

THE PURPOSE OF DIVINE VENGEANCE 

▪︎ Vindication of God's Glory:Divine vengeance shows God’s authority and His commitment to righteousness.It defends God’s holy name against rebellion and sin.

-Isaiah 61:2,"To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,And the day of vengeance of our God..."

 ▪︎Restoration of Justice:God’s vengeance brings justice to those who have been oppressed or wronged.He ensures that injustice will be addressed in His time.

-Romans 12:19,"Beloved,do not avenge yourselves,but rather give place to wrath...vengeance is Mine,I will repay,"says the Lord."

▪︎Disciplining the wicked:God’s vengeance serves as a warning and correction to those who persist in evil.

-Revelation 19:11-21,"Now I saw the heaven opened,and behold,a white horse.And He who sat on him was called faithful and true,and in righteousness He Judges and makes war....And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse..."

SHOULD A CHRISTIAN TAKE PERSONAL REVENGE?

▪︎ Trust God’s Judgment:Believers must leave judgment in God’s hands, trusting that He will make things right.

-Psalm 37:5-6,"Commit your way to the Lord,Trust also in Him,and He shall bring it to pass.He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,And your justice as the noonday."

▪︎ Forgive and Leave room for God’s wrath: As believers, we are called to forgive our enemies and not seek personal revenge. 

-Matthew 5:39,"But I tell you not to resist an evil person.But whoever slaps you on your right cheek,turn the other to him also."

 ▪︎Live with a sense of accountability: Understanding that God is a righteous judge should lead us to live with integrity, knowing we are accountable to Him.

-Romans 14:12,"So then each of us shall give account of himself to God."

▪︎Christians are taught not to take personal revenge. Instead, they are encouraged to leave vengeance to God.

-Romans 12:19,"Beloved,do not avenge yourselves,but rather give place to wrath;for it is written,"Vengeance is mine,I will repay,"says the Lord."

 ▪︎Believers do not have to take matters into their hands when wronged. 

-Deuteronomy 32:35,"Vengeance is mine,and recompense;Their foot shall slip in due time;For the day of their calamity is at hand...."

▪︎Christians are asked to love their enemies,do good to those who hate them and to pray for those who persecute them.

-Matthew 5:44,"But I say to you,love your enemies,bless those who curse you,do good to those who hate you,and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you. "

▪︎Do not take personal revenge because of old hatred, so that the wrath of God will not fall upon you.

-Ezekiel 25:15-17,"Thus says the Lord God:"Because the philistines dealt vengefully and took vengeance with a spiteful heart,to destroy because of the old hatred.....I will execute great vengeance on them with furious rebukes;and they shall know that I am the Lord."

CONCLUSION 

Divine vengeance is a powerful reminder that God is the ultimate judge, and His justice is always perfect. While human hearts may long for retribution, we can find peace in knowing that God will right all wrongs in His perfect timing.As believers, we are called to trust in God's judgment, forgive those who wrong us, and live with integrity, knowing that He will settle all accounts. Let us rest in the assurance that God, in His wisdom and fairness, will bring an end to all evil and restore righteousness. May this truth empower us to live with hope, patience, and faith, trusting that God’s justice will prevail.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE 

Lord Jesus, Your word in 1 John 1:8-9 reminds me that if I claim to be without sin, I deceive myself. I repent of my sins and accept You as my Lord and Savior. Thank You for dying on the cross to free me from the bondage of sin and to cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Jesus Christ, please come into my life and take complete control. Amen

PRAYERS

1) Father, in the name of Jesus, I ask that You bring vengeance upon my adversaries and repay those who harbor hatred towards me. Let Your justice prevail and vindicate me from all wrongdoings.In Jesus' name.

2) O Lord, I pray that You execute Your divine vengeance upon the evil-doers who dwell among us.Let Your righteous judgment be upon them, and let no wickedness go unpunished.In Jesus' name.

3) Lord Jesus, in the day of Your vengeance, do not spare my adversaries. In Your mighty name, I ask that You will deal with them justly and swiftly, for You are the righteous Judge.In Jesus' name.

4) O God, arise with Your vengeance, and deliver me from all my oppressors.I seek Your saving power and ask that You bring justice to my situation.In Jesus' name.

5) Let the sword of the Lord fall upon all my adversaries, and let it consume them. May Your judgment come swiftly, and may Your enemies be brought low before You.In Jesus' name.

6) O Lord, bring an end to all the wicked acts that have been directed against me. Make a complete and utter end of all the evil that seeks to harm me.In Jesus' name.

7) Father, I ask that You destroy every wicked scheme that has been devised against me.May their plans be brought to nothing, and may Your will be done in my life.In Jesus' name.

8) O Lord, I repent for taking matters into my own hands and seeking personal revenge due to old wounds and hatred. I ask for Your forgiveness, and I release all bitterness and anger.In Jesus' name.

9) I declare that whatever was meant for my harm, God will turn it around for my good. I trust that You will work all things together for my benefit,and for Your glory.In Jesus' name.

10) Father, execute vengeance with righteous anger and fury upon all my adversaries who seek to harm me.May Your divine wrath fall upon them, and may Your justice be fully realized.In Jesus' name.

11)I declare that i will not place my trust in the works of my own hands, nor worship the fruit of my labor.I surrender all that I have to You, trusting in You alone as my Creator and Provider.In Jesus' name.

12) The Lord is my stronghold, and I will find refuge in Him during the day of trouble.I call upon His strength and protection, knowing He will be my shield and deliverer.In Jesus' name.

13) Father, I ask that You take vengeance on those who do not know God ,and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.Let Your righteous judgment fall upon them, that they may come to repentance.In Jesus' name.

14) Father, destroy those who have bound themselves by oath to harm or kill me.May their plans be broken, and may Your protection surround me on every side.In Jesus' name.

15) I destroy every unrighteous satanic decree that has been issued against me. Let no evil word or curse have power over me, for I am covered by the blood of Jesus.In Jesus' name.

16) Father, do not deliver me into the hands of my enemies.I trust in Your protection and ask that You preserve me from all who seek to harm me.In Jesus' name.

17) O Lord, send Your sword against my adversaries and execute vengeance upon them.Let Your divine retribution be swift, and let Your justice be established on the earth.In Jesus' name.

18) Lord Jesus, help me to trust in God’s judgment rather than seeking personal retaliation.Grant me the strength to forgive and to rely on you to fight on my behalf, knowing that you are my advocate.In Jesus' name.

19) O Lord, remove the heavy burdens that have weighed me down and caused me distress.I ask for Your relief, and for the peace that comes with Your deliverance and rest.In Jesus' name.

20) Father, help me not to take matters into my own hands when I am wronged. Give me the grace to trust in Your timing, knowing that You will avenge me in due season.In Jesus' name.
