Sermon:Death of a believer

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO DIE ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE?

●Physical Separation: The Bible teaches that death is a physical separation of the soul from the body. The body will return to the earth and the soul will return to God.

-Ecclesiastes 12:7“Then the dust will return to the earth as it was,and the spirit will return to God who gave it”

●Consequence of Sin: The Bible teaches that death is a consequence of sin, which entered the world through Adam and Eve's disobedience in the Garden of Eden.

-Romans 5:12-"Therfore,just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin,and this death spread to all men, because all sinned."

●Sleep: The Bible often describes death as sleep. This emphasizes that death is not an end,but rather a temporary state of being.

-Psalm 13:3," Consider and hear me,O Lord my God:enlighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death.

●Transition to Eternity: The Bible teaches that death is a transition from this life to eternity. This means that when people die, they will either be reunited with God in heaven or face judgment in hell.

-Revelation 20:12-"And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. Then another book was opened. And another book was opened, which is the book of life."

THE INEVITABILITY OF DEATH

Are we all going to die someday? Yes, the Bible teaches that death is a universal human experience that will come to all people. The bible states,"It is appointed for men to die once, and after that comes judgment"(Hebrews 9:27).This underscores that every person will face death and then judgment before God.

However, death is not the end; it is a transition from physical life to eternal life for those who believe in God(John 5:24) "The last enemy to be destroyed is death" (1 Corinthians 15:26),indicating that death will ultimately be defeated by God's power. This can be a source of hope, especially in the face of fear or uncertainty about death.

The Bible describes death as a consequence of sin (Romans 5:12-14),and arising from the curse placed on humanity(Genesis 3:16-19). While death is a reality we will all face, it also serves as a reminder of the need for redemption.

For those who put their trust in Jesus, death brings the promise of eternal life. In Him,we find hope and comfort in the face of this inevitable reality.

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT DEATH OF A BELIEVER

◇Transformation occurs at death for believers:Not all will sleep(die)but all will be changed.

-1 Corinthians 15:We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed."

◇The hope of eternal life and the promise of resurrection for believers:Those who died in Christ will be resurrected first at the return of the Lord.

-1 Thessalonians 4:16,"And the dead in Christ will rise first."

◇The earthly body is described as a tent that will be replaced by a heavenly dwelling. This indicates the temporary nature of physical existence and the eternal nature of what awaits believers after death.

-1 Corinthians 5:1,"For we know that if our earthly house, this tent,is destroyed,we have a building from God,a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."

◇Sin entered the world through one man (Adam) and led to death for all. While physical death is a consequence of sin, believers have hope through Christ's redemptive work.

-Romans 5:12,"Therefore,just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin,and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned."

◇Believers have hope of being with Christ after death.

-Philippians 1:21-23,"To live is Christ, and to die is gain.....I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with the Christ."

◇The hope of believers in eternity:God will wipe away every tear, and there will be no more death or mourning.

-Revelation 21:4,"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes;there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying."

◇Jesus is the resurrection and the life, whoever believes in Him will live even though they die.

-John 11:25,"I am the resurrection and the life.He who believes in Me,though he may die,he shall live."

-Psalm 34:18, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit."

□Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to Him for rest, indicating that He provides comfort and relief for those overwhelmed by grief.

-Matthew 11:28-29,"Come to me,all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest......And you will find rest for your souls."

□This future promise assures believers that their current sorrows will be replaced by eternal joy and comfort in God's presence.

-Revelation 21:4,"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes;there shall be no more death nor sorrow, nor crying."
