Sermon:HOW TO QUIT DRINKING FOR GOOD
Drinking alcohol is a common practice, but examining the reasons to quit can guide us toward a more fruitful and fulfilling life in Christ. Quitting drinking is not merely about abstaining; it’s about embracing a fuller, richer life in God's presence.
WHY IS IT GOOD TO QUIT DRINKING?
Quitting drinking is beneficial because excessive alcohol consumption can lead to sin and harm our relationships with God and others.
The Bible teaches that drunkenness is a form of gluttony and that it can lead to foolish behavior and quarreling(Proverbs 23:20-21 & Proverbs 20:1)
-Proverbs 20:1,"Wine is a mocker,strong drink is a brawler."
-Proverbs 23:20-21,"Do not mix with winebibbers,or with gluttonous eaters of meat; For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty. "
By choosing to abstain, individuals can cultivate a stronger relationship with God, allowing for greater focus on spiritual pursuits and avoiding the distractions and temptations associated with excessive drinking.
SOBRIETY AND EMBRACING IT AS A PATH TO CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AND OTHERS
◇SOBRIETY:This refers to the state of being sober, which means not being under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is more than just abstaining from substances; it involves clarity of mind, emotional stability, and the ability to make sound decisions.
▪︎SOBRIETY AS A PATH TO A CLOSER RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
Sobriety is a vital step toward a deeper relationship with God.Choosing sobriety opens our hearts and minds to the fullness of the Holy Spirit, allowing us to experience His guidance and presence in profound ways.
-Ephesians 5:18,"And do not be drunk with wine,in which is dissipation;but be filled with the Spirit."
When we embrace sobriety,we cultivate a clear mind, free from the fog of intoxication. This clarity enables us to hear God's voice more distinctly and to discern His will with greater accuracy.
Sobriety fosters a sense of self-control and discipline, which are essential in our spiritual journey.
Embracing sobriety not only deepens our relationship with God but also empowers us to fulfill our calling in Him.
▪︎STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH SOBRIETY
Sobriety plays a crucial role in fostering healthier relationships, enabling us to embody the fruits of the Spirit and create a loving and nurturing environment for those we care about.
-Galatians 5:22-22,"But the fruit of the spirit is love,joy,peace,long-suffering,kindness, goodness,faithfulness,gentleness,self-control." These qualities—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—flourish in an environment free from the influence of alcohol.
When we are sober,we are more present and attentive to our loved ones. This presence allows us to engage in meaningful conversations, listen actively, and respond with empathy.
Without the distractions or impairments caused by drinking,we can fully participate in family gatherings, nurture friendships, and strengthen bonds.
Sobriety also enhances our ability to express love and kindness. When we are clear-headed, we can navigate conflicts with patience and grace, fostering deeper understanding and connection.
Sobriety can serve as a powerful testimony to others. By modeling a lifestyle centered on healthy choices, we inspire those around us to reflect on their own habits and relationships.
THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF QUITTING DRINKING

By embracing sobriety, we honor our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit and reap the physical health benefits of living free from the negative impacts of alcohol, ultimately enhancing our overall well-being.
◇Better Sleep:Alcohol can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to poor quality sleep and daytime fatigue.By quitting drinking, individuals often experience more restful and restorative sleep, which is essential for physical and mental health.
