Sermon:The gift of Love:The Christmas Story
CHRISTMAS:THE CELEBRATION OF CHRIST'S BIRTH
Christmas is celebrated as the birth of Jesus Christ, a crucial event in Christian faith. It marks the moment when God sent His Son to Earth, born to Mary in Bethlehem, fulfilling prophecies of the Messiah. The birth of Jesus is considered the ultimate demonstration of God's love for humanity, as He offered His Son to bring salvation to a fallen world. Christmas, therefore, is not just a celebration of His birth, but also a reminder of God's sacrificial love for all people.
THE PROMISE OF CHRIST’S BIRTH
The promise of Christ's birth is rooted in the Old Testament prophecy of a coming Savior, foretold by the prophet Isaiah and other prophets. These prophecies spoke of a coming Messiah who would bring peace, salvation, and hope to a world in need of redemption. In christian belief,Christ’s birth is the fulfillment of God's promise to send a savior and marks the beginning of God's intervention in human history to offer healing, and eternal peace through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. His arrival is viewed as the ultimate expression of God's love and the solution to the brokenness and sin in the world, offering salvation to all who believe in Him.
-Isaiah 9:6,"For unto us a Child is born,Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful,Counselor,Mighty God, Everlasting Father,Prince of Peace."
THE HUMBLE BIRTH OF CHRIST
Jesus, was born in a humble manger in Bethlehem. This lowly beginning signifies God's choice to enter the world in humility, not in power or grandeur.By choosing humility, Jesus demonstrated that God's kingdom values love, compassion, and humility above all.
-Luke 2:6-7,"So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son,and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn."
THE ANGELS' ANNOUNCEMENT:GOOD NEWS OF GREAT JOY.
The angels' announcement to the shepherds brings a message of profound joy, peace, and hope to all people. The angels' message is a reminder that Christmas is a time to rejoice in the hope, peace, and joy that Christ's birth brings to the world.
-Luke 2:10-12,"Then the angel said to them,"Do not be afraid, for behold,I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you:You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger."
THE SHEPHERDS' RESPONSE TO THE GOOD NEWS
The shepherds responded to the angel's message with immediate faith and obedience. They didn't hesitate; they went to Bethlehem with haste to see the Savior. The actions of the shepherds encourage us to respond to God's gift of Jesus with worship and praise, sharing the message of His love and grace with others. The Christmas story calls for a response of trust in God's promises and a life that reflects the peace and joy that Christ brings.
-Luke 2:15-20,"So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another,"Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.....Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen,as it was told them."
THE LOVE REVEALED IN CHRIST’S BIRTH
The birth of Jesus is the beginning of God's incredible love story with humanity.God’s love is demonstrated in sending His Son into the world to reconcile humanity with God.It is a love that invites all to believe in Him and experience eternal life.
The Christmas story, therefore, is the embodiment of God's love—a love that gives, saves, and promises eternal life to all who receive it.
-John 3:16,"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
CHRIST LIFE:A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF LOVE
Jesus' life is the ultimate example of God's love in action. Throughout His life,Jesus demonstrated love through His healing, teaching, and deep compassion for those who were broken, suffering, or in need. His actions were always guided by a heart of love and mercy, reaching out to the outcasts, the sick, the poor, and the sinners, offering hope and healing.Christ love is not only comforting but transformative, calling people into a relationship with Him where they find rest, healing, and renewal for their souls.(Matthew 11:28-30). Jesus' life, full of grace, forgiveness, and care for the hurting, serves as the perfect model of how we are to love others.
-Matthew 11:28-30,"Come to Me,all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me,for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
CHRIST’S SACRIFICE:THE ULTIMATE EXPRESSION OF LOVE
Christ's sacrificial death on the cross is the ultimate expression of God's love for humanity,as it demonstrates self-giving love, grace, and mercy. Jesus' death on the cross is the greatest expression of love because it was a willing, sacrificial act, done to reconcile us to God. Through His death, Jesus took upon Himself the punishment for our sins, providing the path to redemption. Christ's sacrifice was not because of human worthiness, but out of God's love and grace. Through Jesus' death, Christians believe that forgiveness of sins and eternal life are made available to all who believe in Him and accept His sacrifice.
-Romans 5:8,"But God demonstrated His own love toward us,in that while we were still sinners,Christ died for us."
CHRIST’S RESURRECTION:THE VICTORY OF LOVE.
In Christian belief,Christ's resurrection is the ultimate victory of God's love, triumphing over death, sin, and all the forces that separate humanity from God. Through His resurrection, Jesus demonstrated that love has the power to conquer all forms of separation from God, including the greatest enemy—death itself.Christ's victory over death assures us that, in Him, we too can overcome death and live eternally with God.The resurrection is the fulfillment of God's plan of redemption and love for humanity, providing hope, assurance, and the promise of eternal life in Christ.
-1 Corinthians 15:20-22,"But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death,by man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. "
CHRIST’S ASCENSION:LOVE CONTINUES TO INTERCEDE FOR US
Christ’s ascension into heaven marks a continuation of His love and care for us. After His resurrection, Jesus ascended to the right hand of God the Father, where He now intercedes on our behalf. This ongoing act of intercession is a powerful expression of His enduring love, as He continues to advocate for us before God, ensuring that we have access to God's grace and mercy.
-Romans 8:34,"Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God,who also makes intercession for us."
-Hebrews 7:25,"Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him,since He always lives to make intercession for them."
OUR RESPONSE TO THE LOVE OF CHRIST
As recipients of God's love,Christians are urged to love others as Christ has loved them -unconditionally, sacrificially, and continuously. This includes loving not only those who are easy to love but also those who are difficult to love, just as Jesus demonstrated love even toward His enemies. It also involves showing compassion, kindness, forgiveness, and serving others in tangible ways.
-1 John 4:19,"We love Him because He first loved us."
HOW CAN WE LIVE OUT CHRIST’S LOVE IN OUR DAILY LIVES?
Living out Christ's love means letting His love flow through every area of our lives—at home, at work, in our communities, and in our relationships.
Living out Christ’s love means being active participants in spreading that love to others, reflecting God's heart through our actions, words, and attitudes. By doing so, believers become vessels of God's love, carrying His message and living as testimonies of His grace and love.
• Practice Compassion and Kindness:
Just as Jesus showed compassion to the poor, sick, and marginalized, we are called to show kindness and empathy toward others. This means being sensitive to the needs of those around us, offering a listening ear, and providing practical help where needed.
• Forgive others:Christ demonstrated unconditional forgiveness, even to those who wronged Him. In our own lives, we can reflect this love by forgiving those who hurt us, releasing bitterness, and offering grace just as God has forgiven us.
• Serve others:Jesus came not to be served but to serve. We can live out His love by serving others in our communities, whether through acts of charity, volunteering, or simply helping those in need in our daily interactions.
• Share the good news:Christ's love is demonstrated through the salvation He offers, and we can reflect His love by sharing the message of His grace and salvation with others. Whether through words or actions, we can be witnesses of His love and hope.
• Live with Humility: Jesus demonstrated humility throughout His life, from His birth in a humble manger to His willingness to wash His disciples' feet. In our daily lives, we can live humbly by putting others' needs before our own, avoiding pride, and acknowledging that everything we have is a gift from God.
• Show Patience and Selflessness: Love is patient and kind. In our interactions with others, especially in difficult situations, we can practice patience, choose to be understanding, and put others’ needs before our own desires.
• Seek justice and stand for the oppressed: Jesus stood for justice, defended the weak, and cared for the oppressed. We can reflect Christ’s love by standing up for those who are treated unfairly, working to promote justice, and supporting efforts to lift up the marginalized in our communities.
• Pray for others:One of the most loving things we can do is pray for others. Just as Jesus intercedes for us, we can intercede for those in need, asking God to guide, protect, and bless them.
