Sermon:Divine Limitations: What God Cannot Do

GOD’S OMNIPOTENCE:Unlimited Power
God is omnipotent, meaning He possesses unlimited power and authority over all things.
God’s omnipotence means He created the universe, sustains all things, and can accomplish His will without resistance. However, this does not mean God can or will do anything. His power is always in harmony with His nature and character.
These Scriptures affirm that God is all-powerful, sovereign, and unstoppable. Nothing in creation can limit or resist Him, and His will always prevails.
●God’s power in creation – Jeremiah 32:17
God’s power is unlimited:He created the heavens and the earth, and nothing is too hard for Him.
-Jeremiah 32:17, "Ah, Sovereign Lord, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for You."
● God’s power over human limitations – Matthew 19:26
God can do what is impossible for humans:He is not bound by human limitations or circumstances.
-Matthew 19:26, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
● God’s sovereign rule over all things – Revelation 19:6
God reigns supreme:His omnipotence is tied to His sovereignty. He is not just powerful, He rules with power, meaning nothing happens outside His control.
-Revelation 19:6,"Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!"
● God does whatever He pleases – Psalm 115:3
God acts according to His perfect wisdom and will:No one can prevent or challenge His decisions.
-Psalm 115:3,"But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases."
●God’s supreme authority over all things, in heaven and on earth– Daniel 4:35.
God’s power is unmatched:No one can question or stop His plans, reinforcing His absolute authority over all creation.
-Danieal 4:35, "All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’"

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT GOD’S OMNIPOTENCE
●God can do absolutely anything, even the Illogical.
Some assume that omnipotence means God can do things that are self-contradictory, such as making a rock too heavy for Him to lift. However, true omnipotence does not include logical absurdities; rather, God is perfectly rational and does not engage in contradictions.
●God can sin or act against His nature.
God is holy (Leviticus 11:44) and righteous (Psalm 145:17), He cannot lie (Titus 1:2), be tempted by evil (James 1:13), or deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13). His power is always consistent with His perfect character.
●God can change His mind in a way that undermines His sovereignty.
Some believe God can change His plans arbitrarily, but scripture teaches that God is immutable (Malachi 3:6, Hebrews 13:8). While He may respond to human repentance or intercession, His nature and ultimate purposes never change.
●God can force people to love and obey Him.
While God is all-powerful, He does not override human free will in matters of love and obedience. He desires a genuine relationship, not forced compliance (Deuteronomy 30:19-20).
●God can forgive without justice being served.
Some think God can simply overlook sin without consequence, but His justice requires atonement (Romans 3:25-26). This is why Christ’s sacrifice was necessary—God's love and justice must both be fulfilled.
DIVINE LIMITATIONS:What God Cannot Do
While God is all-powerful, there are certain things He cannot do—not because of weakness, but because they contradict His perfect and unchanging nature.
These divine limitations arise from His holiness, truth, and righteousness.

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT WHAT GOD CAN NOT DO
●God cannot change.
God is immutable—His character, nature, and promises remain constant. This is a great source of security for believers, knowing that He is eternally reliable.
-Malachi 3:6, "For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob."
-Hebrews 13:8, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."
●God cannot lie nor repent.
Unlike humans, God does not deceive or change His mind. His truth is absolute, and His promises are guaranteed.
-Numbers 23:19, "God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?"
-John 14:6, "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'"
-Titus 1:2, "In hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began."
●God cannot deny himself.
God is always true to His nature and His word. Even when people fail, He remains faithful.
-2 Timothy 2:13, "If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself."
●God cannot be tempted by evil.
God is perfectly holy. He is not drawn to sin, nor does He entice others to do evil.
-James 1:13, "Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am tempted by God; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone."
●God cannot break His covenant.
God’s covenants are everlasting. He keeps His word and remains faithful to His people.
-Psalm 89:34, "My covenant I will not break, Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips."
-Deuteronomy 7:9, "Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments."
●God cannot faint nor grow weary.
God never tires or weakens. His strength is infinite, unlike human frailty.
-Isaiah 40:28, "Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable."
●God cannot leave you nor forsake you.
God’s presence is constant. He will never abandon those who trust in Him.
-Hebrews 13:5, "Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.'"
●God cannot slumber nor sleep.
God is always watching over His people. Unlike human guardians, He never needs rest.
-Psalm 121:3-4, "He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep."
●God cannot despise a broken and contrite heart.
God responds to true repentance with mercy and grace. He does not reject those who humbly seek Him.
-Psalm 51:17, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart—These, O God, You will not despise."
●God cannot be mocked.
God is just. No one can deceive or manipulate Him without facing the consequences.
-Galatians 6:7, "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap."

CONCLUSION
Understanding what God cannot do deepens our appreciation for who He truly is. His limitations are not weaknesses; they are affirmations of His perfect nature. He cannot lie, sin, change His character, or act unjustly because He is wholly righteous and true. He cannot force love because He values genuine relationships. And He cannot deny His promises because He is eternally faithful.
Rather than diminishing His power, these divine limitations magnify His glory. They assure us that we serve a God who is trustworthy, holy, and sovereign.
