Sermon: The Power of Decrees -Speaking God’s Authority into Action

 What is a Decree?

A decree is an official order, command, or edict that carries authority, often issued by a king, ruler, or governing authority.

Decrees in Scripture

In the Bible, decrees are not merely human commands but can carry divine authority and power, especially when they align with God's will and purposes. When spoken in faith, they have the potential to release God's plans into the natural realm. As children of God, believers have been given the authority to speak God’s word over their lives, circumstances, and environments. This principle is demonstrated throughout Scripture, where God's people made bold declarations that shifted outcomes and fulfilled divine promises.

Biblical examples of powerful decrees:

•Elijah’s decree over Rain:Elijah boldly declared that there would be no rain except at his word.God honored Elijah’s decree, causing a drought that lasted three and a half years.

-1 Kings 17:1,"As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word."

•Job’s decree of Restoration.

-Job 22:28,"You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you; and light will shine on your ways."

This scripture affirms the principle that when the righteous declare God's word, it is established.

•Peter’s decree of Healing.

-Acts 3:6,"Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you; In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk."

Peter declared to the lame man at the temple gate: "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk."The man was instantly healed, walking and leaping in joy.

•Jesus decrees Lazarus’ resurrection.

-John 11:43-44,"Now when He had said these things,He cried with a loud voice," Lazarus, come forth! And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them," Loose him,and let him go."

Jesus cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth!" Lazarus, who had been dead for four days, was raised to life.

•Paul’s decree over Elymas the sorcerer.

-Acts 13:11,"And now, indeed, the hand of the Lord is upon you,and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time."

Paul declared that Elymas would be blind for a season because he opposed the gospel. Immediately, mist and darkness fell upon him.

•God’s decree through creation (Genesis 1).

God repeatedly said, "Let there be…" — and creation came into existence by His spoken word. This shows the divine precedent for the power of spoken decrees.

•King Hezekiah’s Prayer (Isaiah 37:14-20). Hezekiah decreed God’s power over his enemies, and God responded with deliverance.

-Isaiah 37:20,"Now therefore, O Lord our God,save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the Lord,You alone."

•Jesus’ decrees (Mark 11:23-24)

Jesus speaks of the power of faith-filled words in decreeing mountains to move.

-Mark 11:23,"For assuredly, I say to you ,whoever says to this mountain,'Be removed and be cast into the sea,'and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done,he will have whatever he says."

The Power of Decrees when aligned with God’s will.

•God’s decrees carry authority and purpose. A decree is not merely a statement—it is a divine command rooted in God’s sovereign plan. In Isaiah 10:22, the decree of consumption  shows that even judgment serves a purpose in God’s redemptive work. His decrees are never aimless; they are always tied to His will, whether to correct, judge, bless, or restore.

-Isaiah 10:22 ,"For Though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea,yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness."

•Judgment or Blessing:The dual edge of divine decrees.Throughout Scripture, God’s decrees bring both blessing and judgment.

For the disobedient, the decree may mean discipline or destruction. For the faithful remnant, the decree signals preservation, hope, and restoration. This teaches us that decrees must be understood within the broader purpose of God’s righteousness and love.

•The Power of our declarations lies in alignment, not mere words. A spoken decree from the believer is powerful only when it aligns with God’s revealed word. Speaking positive words, commands, or “decrees” without discerning God's heart is empty and ineffective. But when we speak in harmony with God’s word ,situations shift according to Heaven’s design. As Jesus taught, “Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven...” (Matthew 18:18)—but this assumes intimate fellowship with God and knowledge of His will.

•Decrees reflect partnership with God’s sovereignty. To decree rightly is to partner with Heaven’s intent. The believer’s authority flows not from personal desire or force of words but from intimacy with God, revelation of His purpose, and obedience to His leading. Without this alignment, our decrees risk being self-willed rather than God-willed.

□The Role of Faith in decreeing God's word.

Faith:The Foundation of effective decrees. Decreeing God's word is more than mere verbal confession. It is a spiritual principle that draws its power from faith. Faith activates the supernatural working of God in response to our declarations.Without genuine belief, words remain empty and ineffective. Faith connects the decree to the power of God, causing heaven to respond. As Hebrews 11:6 reminds us, "Without faith, it is impossible to please God." Therefore, every declaration must spring from a heart that truly believes in God's promises and His ability to fulfill them.

•Faith Transforms words into creative power.

When we decree a thing by faith, we are partnering with the creative power of God Himself. Genesis shows us that God created the world through spoken words.(Genesis 1).In the same way, our decrees—when aligned with His word and backed by faith carry the authority to shape circumstances, open doors, and change destinies. Faith activates this supernatural dimension where divine possibilities become earthly realities.

•Decrees without faith are powerless.

Speaking positive words without faith is like shooting arrows without a target. The authority in decreeing God’s word comes from confidence in God’s unchanging truth. The centurion in Matthew 8:8 said, “Only speak a word, and my servant will be healed”—showing that faith in the word alone was enough to release divine power.

•Faith draws God's power into the situation.

When decrees are made in faith, they are not simply wishes or hopes—they are spiritual transactions. Faith unlocks the resources of heaven and invites God’s intervention. Mark 11:23 says, “Whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart... he will have whatever he says.” It is the assurance of faith that causes the mountain to move.

•Light shines on the way of the faithful decreer.

As Job 22:28 promises, decrees made in faith result in established outcomes and divine guidance: “Light will shine on your ways.” This means clarity, direction, and favor accompany those who boldly speak God’s word with unwavering faith. God illuminates their path, revealing the next steps and confirming His promises.

-Job 22:28,“You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you; and light will shine on your ways.”

How to Use Decrees in our Daily Lives.

🔹️Declare God’s word over your circumstances.

What this means: Instead of simply speaking fear, doubt, or complaints, believers are called to speak God’s promises into their situations—whether it’s health, finances, family, or emotional struggles.

•Example: When facing sickness, declare:“By His stripes I am healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

•When facing lack, declare: “My God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in glory” (Philippians 4:19).

🔹️Speak with God-given authority.

•Jesus gave His followers spiritual authority to bind and loose (Matthew 18:18). Believers are called to speak with confidence knowing heaven backs up God’s word.

•Example:Instead of saying, “I hope things change,” say: “In Jesus’ name, this situation must align with God’s word of peace, order, and blessing.”

You are a child of God (Romans 8:17)—a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9). Speak boldly, not as a beggar, but as an ambassador of God’s kingdom.

🔹️Use decrees for spiritual warfare.

•Spiritual weapon:Decreeing God’s truth is part of fighting spiritual battles (Ephesians 6:17). The word of God is a sword—meant to be spoken against lies, fear, temptation, and oppression.

•Example:When battling fear, declare:“God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

When sensing spiritual attack, decree:“No weapon formed against me shall prosper” (Isaiah 54:17).

🔹️The effect of decrees in the spirit realm.

•Decrees are spiritual catalysts: Decrees are not ordinary words or empty confessions; they are spiritual declarations that initiate movements in the unseen realm. When spoken in faith, based on God’s word, decrees set spiritual forces in motion to accomplish God's will on earth (Isaiah 55:11 – "So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to me void..."

•Decrees align earth with heaven: Every time a believer decrees God's promises, they are aligning earthly situations with God's divine purposes in heaven (Matthew 6:10 – "Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven." It is a spiritual partnership if believers speak God’s word, and heaven responds.

•Decrees release angels and divine assistance:When decrees are made, angels are often dispatched to fulfill what was spoken in line with God’s word (Psalm 103:20,"Bless the Lord, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word, heeding the voice of His word." This shows that spiritual beings respond to decrees that reflect God’s truth.

•Decrees shift atmospheres and circumstances: Declarations of faith can break spiritual oppression, release healing, prosperity, or peace, and prepare the way for God’s intervention. Negative words can empower the enemy, but Godly decrees empower the Holy Spirit and angelic hosts.

•Decrees establish authority: As children of God (Romans 8:17), believers hold spiritual authority to enforce heaven’s will on earth through spoken decrees (Matthew 18:18,"Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven..." When decrees are spoken with authority and faith, they become instruments of divine enforcement in the spiritual realm.

Conclusion:

✔️Decrees are powerful tools that activate the spiritual realm.

✔️They cause angelic movement, release divine answers, and align earthly situations with heaven’s design.

✔️Believers must decree God’s word—not their own desires—to ensure heaven backs their words.
