Sermon: The Heart of Giving
Introduction
Opening Scripture: John 3:16,"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
Definition of Giving
Giving is the voluntary act of offering something of value—time, resources, love, or service without expecting anything in return. It is an outward expression of an inward condition. True giving flows from a heart that is aligned with God’s love.
Giving is Central to God's Nature
John 3:16 is one of the most well-known verses in the Bible, and it beautifully reveals the heart of God. His love compelled Him to give—not just anything, but His best, His only Son.God didn’t give out of obligation. He gave out of love. This shows that giving isn’t just something God does; it’s who He is.As children of God, we are called to mirror that same generous spirit. When we give, we reflect the heart of our heavenly Father.
The Importance of Giving in Personal and Spiritual Growth
• Giving stretches our faith and trust in God.
• It breaks selfishness and fosters humility.
• It deepens our compassion and sense of purpose.
• Most importantly, giving shifts our focus from what we have to who we serve.
True spiritual growth is not measured just by how much we receive from God, but also by how much we are willing to give for His glory.
The heart of giving isn’t about the size of the gift but the motive behind it. God looks at the heart, not the amount. As believers, we are called to cultivate a heart that gives joyfully, sacrificially, and consistently.
The three Dimensions of Giving
God’s word teaches us to live a lifestyle of generosity, and this includes three main areas:
a)Giving to Oneself
• This isn’t selfishness; it’s stewardship.
• We give to ourselves by investing in spiritual, emotional, and physical health—so we can give from a full, healthy heart.
Self-care and Its Significance.
When we talk about giving, many people immediately think of giving to others or to God—but one area often neglected is giving to yourself.
Before we can pour into others, we must be filled ourselves. Even Jesus took time to rest, pray, and care for His physical and emotional well-being (Mark 1:35, Luke 5:16).
▪️Physical Well-being
Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).
• Caring for your physical health—through proper rest, exercise, nutrition, and sleep—is not selfish; it's spiritual stewardship.
• When your body is healthy, you're better equipped to serve others and fulfill God’s purpose.
▪️Mental and Emotional Health
• God wants you emotionally whole. Taking time to process emotions, seek counseling if needed, and rest your mind isn’t weakness—it’s wisdom.
• Even Elijah, a powerful prophet, needed time to rest and recover emotionally (1 Kings 19:4–8).
- Proverbs 4:23, "Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life."
Practical Ways to Give to Yourself
▪️Setting Boundaries
• Jesus set clear boundaries—He withdrew from the crowds to be alone with the Father.
• Boundaries are not barriers to love; they are pathways to healthy relationships.
• Saying “no” sometimes is a way of saying “yes” to what matters most.
- Matthew 5:37,“Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’
▪️Investing in Personal Development.
• God has placed gifts and talents in you. Cultivating them is a way of honoring Him.
• Take time to discover who God created you to be and grow into that identity.
• Read, learn, grow, and seek wisdom.
- Proverbs 4:7," Wisdom is the principal thing, Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding."
▪️Practicing mindfulness and Self-Reflection.
• Journaling, praying, and taking quiet time to reflect on your thoughts and actions brings clarity and peace.
• Mindfulness helps you become more present with God, yourself, and others.
- Psalm 139:23–24 says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart… lead me in the way everlasting.”
b)Giving to Others
• This includes acts of kindness, charity, service, and encouragement.
• We are called to be conduits of God’s love to the world around us.
- Acts 20:35, “…It is more blessed to give than to receive."
- Luke 6:38, “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken to gether, and running over…”
The Value of Generosity and Community Support.
God’s heart beats for community, compassion, and connection. As followers of Christ, we are called not just to believe—but to belong, serve, and give. Generosity is not limited to finances; it is a lifestyle of love expressed through time, talents, resources, and support for one another.
▪️Financial Contributions
Though not the only form, financial giving enables the mission of the church and support of those in need.
• Principle: Stewardship reflects our trust in God as our provider.
• Practice: Tithes, offerings, charitable giving, and supporting missions.
▪️Giving of Time and Resources
Scripture: Ephesians 5:15-16, “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”
• Time is limited and valuable: Use it for purposes that build God’s kingdom.
Resource giving includes:
• Transportation (giving rides, helping with errands)
• Hospitality (opening your home)
• Meals (feeding the hungry, sharing food)
• Access (connecting others to help or opportunities)
• Look for opportunities to serve in: Your church(ministries, events, outreach), and the community (volunteering, mentoring)
• Your family (intentional time, acts of kindness)
▪️Giving of Talents and Skills
Scripture: 1 Peter 4:10 ,“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”
• Every believer is uniquely gifted.
•No skill is too small in God’s hands.
Your skills are tools for ministry: Music, administration, teaching, craftsmanship, tech, counseling etc.
Example: Bezalel and Oholiab – Craftsmen used by God to build the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:1-5).They didn't preach sermons—but their hands built the place where God would dwell among His people.
▪️Giving of Love
Scriptures:1 Corinthians 13:3b,“…but have not love, it profits me nothing.”
- 1 John 3:18 ,“…My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.”
• Love is the foundation of all other forms of giving.
• Without love, giving loses its eternal value.
• Love in action means:emotional support, encouragement, and meeting spiritual and practical needs.
Living a Life of Generous Compassion
Generosity is not a moment—it’s a mindset. A generous person looks for ways to give, not because they have excess, but because they live from a heart of love, service, and worship.
Reflection Questions:
• Which form of giving do I naturally lean into—and which one do I need to grow in?
• How am I using my time, talents, and resources to serve others?
• Do I give from a place of love or obligation?
c)Giving to God
• Through tithes, offerings, worship, time, and talents.
• Giving to God honors Him and places Him first in our lives.
Bible references:
- Proverbs 3:9, “Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase…”
- 2 Corinthians 9:6 ,“…He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully…”
- Romans 12:1, “…By the mercies of God,that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”
The Spiritual Aspect of Giving
Giving is not just a financial act—it’s a spiritual discipline and an expression of worship, trust, and love for God. Scripture presents giving as a reflection of our relationship with God and our priorities in life.
▪️Financial Giving
Giving financially supports God’s work and shows our trust in Him. It’s an act of obedience and dependence, demonstrating that we believe God is our true provider.
Biblical financial giving includes:
•Tithes
•Firstfruits
•Freewill offerings
•Vowed offerings
▪️Tithes
• The tithe represents 10% of your income, given as a sacred portion to support God's work.
- Malachi 3:10,"Bring all the tithes into the storehouse.."
Reasons why tax refund (or tax deductions/ refund mechanisms) should not be applicable to tithes in churches:
Tithing is a Spiritual Act, not a Transactional One.
▪️Tithing is an act of worship and obedience to God, not a financial transaction meant for earthly benefits such as tax refunds.
God promises His own blessings for obedience in tithing, not government rewards.
Allowing tax refunds for tithes shifts the motivation from faith and generosity to financial return.
- Malachi 3:10," Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house...."
▪️Giving should be done willingly and without expectation of return.Biblical giving is supposed to be voluntary, cheerful, and not done for personal gain.
Seeking tax refunds for tithes may make giving less about cheerful worship and more about fiscal benefit.
-2 Corinthians 9:7," So let each one give as he purposes in His heart, not grudgingly or of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver.
▪️Church and state should remain separate.
In Scripture, there is a clear distinction between God’s kingdom and earthly government.
Tax refund risks transforming the church into a tax shelter rather than a place of worship.
▪️Tithes are God's— they should not be entangled with Caesar's systems (like taxation).
Applying for tax refunds on tithes blurs the line between spiritual and governmental responsibilities.
-Matthew 22:21, "So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s."
Risk of Corruption and Manipulation.
▪️Allowing tithes to be tax-deductible can encourage abuse, false reporting, or people giving solely to reduce their tax burden.
Biblical giving must be honest and transparent, not manipulated for gain.
Linking tithes to taxes invites the potential for dishonesty and corruption.
- In the Bible,Ananias and Sapphira lied about their giving to gain favor while keeping back part of it — and were judged for their deception.(Acts 5:1-5)
▪️God, not Government, is the Rewarder.
The Bible teaches that God Himself rewards obedience and generosity.
-Hebrews 11:6b "And that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."
-Luke 6:38 ,"Give, and it will be given to you: Good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over..."
▪️Introducing a tax refund as a reward undermines God’s role as the primary blesser.
It can shift dependence from God to the state for provision and reward.
▪️The Early Church gave sacrificially without Government Incentive.
In the New Testament, believers gave sacrificially to support one another — not to get a refund.
Their motivation was love and community, not tax breaks.
-Acts 4:34-35 ,"Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, and laid them at the apostles' feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need."
▪️Firstfruits
Priority giving—is putting God first before anything else.
- Proverbs 3:9," Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase.”
▪️Freewill Offerings
These are voluntary gifts from a heart of gratitude, beyond the tithe.
- Deuteronomy 16:10,“…With the tribute of a freewill offering from your hand, which you shall give as the Lord your God blesses you…”
▪️Vowed Offerings
These are offerings you promise to God and are responsible to fulfill.
- When you make a vow to the Lord your God, you shall not delay to pay it... (Ecclesiastes 5:4-5; Deut. 23:21)
▪️Cheerful Giving
2 Corinthians 9:7,“So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”
• God is more concerned with the heart behind the gift than the amount.
• Giving should never be driven by guilt, pressure, or obligation—it should be motivated by love and gratitude.
• True joy is experienced when giving is done freely and cheerfully.
Example:
The Poor Widow (Mark 12:41–44) She gave only two small coins, but Jesus praised her because she gave out of faith and joy, not abundance. Her heart of trust pleased God more than the large gifts of the wealthy.
The Blessings and Rewards of Giving to God.
Giving is never a loss—it’s an investment in the Kingdom of God.
▪️Spiritual Growth and Contentment:
Giving breaks greed and materialism, helping us grow in generosity and dependence on God.
▪️God’s Provision:
God promises to bless and provide for cheerful and faithful givers.
- Luke 6:38,“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over…”
▪️Eternal Rewards
Giving shifts our focus from earthly wealth to eternal significance.
- Matthew 6:20,"Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal…”
Other Forms of Giving
Matthew 10:42 ,"And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”
Jesus reminds us that even the simplest acts of kindness are significant in the eyes of God. Giving is not limited to money—it's a lifestyle rooted in love, compassion, and service.
Examples of Non-Monetary Giving
▪️Giving Encouragement
A kind word or a listening ear can uplift someone’s spirit.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:11 ,“Therefore comfort each other and edify one another…”
▪️Giving Forgiveness
Letting go of bitterness frees both the giver and the receiver.
- Matthew 6:14 ,“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”
▪️Giving Hospitality
Opening your home and heart to others reflects God’s love.
- Romans 12:13 ,“…Given to hospitality.”
▪️Giving Mentorship
Investing time to guide and disciple others makes an eternal impact.
- 2 Timothy 2:2 , “...Commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
▪️Giving Your Presence and Empathy
•Simply being there for someone in their time of need is powerful.
- Romans 12:15 ,“Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.”
Conclusion: Living a Life of Generosity
• Giving is an act of worship. It shows reverence, honor, and gratitude toward God.
• Giving is not confined to finances—it encompasses our time, talent, and tenderness.
• We are called to give the first and best, not what’s left over.
• Manage your finances with generosity in mind, intentionally budgeting to support God’s work.
• Invest in eternal things—prioritize the Kingdom of God over material gain.
• Encouragement: Cultivate a lifestyle of generosity. It’s not about the size of the gift but the heart behind it.
• Ultimate Example: Jesus gave the greatest gift—Himself. His life, death, and resurrection are the ultimate model of sacrificial giving.
