Sermon: Spirit husbands and wives

Introduction
Spirit husbands and wives, often referred to as incubus (male) and succubus (female), are spiritual entities believed to enter into intimate relationships with individuals during sleep or in dreams. These entities are commonly associated with spiritual manipulation and emotional distress, leading to a profound impact on personal relationships and mental health.

Significance in Cultural and Religious Frameworks:
Across various cultures, these spirits are often viewed as both terrifying and fascinating. In African Traditional Religions, for instance, they can be seen as manifestations of ancestral spirits or demonic forces. In some Western cultures, they are associated with sinful desires or psychological disturbances. Understanding these entities through a spiritual lens is crucial for comprehending their perceived role in spiritual warfare and mental health.

What does the bible say about spirit spouses?
The Bible does not explicitly mention the concept of “spirit spouses” — a term often used in certain African and Caribbean spiritual traditions or deliverance ministries to describe demonic entities that claim a spiritual marriage with a person, often causing sexual dreams, relationship issues, or blockages in life. However, some biblical passages are commonly used by Christian ministers and believers to understand, confront, and break free from such spiritual phenomena.

●Genesis 2:24,"Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh."
This verse establishes the biblical standard for marriage — between a man and a woman in the physical, not spiritual realm. It shows that God’s intention for intimacy is within the covenant of marriage, which contradicts the idea of spiritual unions with demonic entities.
●1 Corinthians 6:18-20,"Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.Or do you not know that Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in You,whom you have from God,and You are not your own?
Sexual sin has spiritual implications. Spirit spouses are often associated with sexual immorality in dreams (e.g., being attacked sexually or having intimate encounters in sleep). This verse helps believers recognize their authority in Christ and the need to reject anything that defiles the body.
●Ephesians 6:12,"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places."
Spirit spouses are considered spiritual entities — demons operating in the unseen realm. This verse validates the reality of spiritual warfare and encourages believers to use spiritual weapons (Prayer, fasting, the word of God to stand firm in battle against demonic interference).
●Genesis 6:2,"That the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose."
Many believe this bible verse refers to fallen angels (demons) engaging in sexual relations with human women. Some deliverance ministers cite this as a foundation for the origin of spirit spouses, suggesting demonic spirits have sought unlawful spiritual unions since ancient times.
●Colossians 2:15,"Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it."
Through the cross, Jesus Christ defeated all demonic powers. Any spirit claiming authority over a believer is illegal under the blood of Jesus.
●Isaiah 54:5,"For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is His name..."
This verse reminds believers that God is the true spiritual husband of His people — not any demonic entity.

How to break free from spirit spouses biblically.
If someone believes they are being oppressed by a spirit spouse, the Bible offers spiritual tools for freedom:
●Repentance
•Renounce all sexual sin (including in dreams, pornography, masturbation, fornication, etc.).
•Confess and break any ancestral or personal covenants with the demonic.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive…” (1 John 1:9)
●Renunciation
•Verbally reject any spiritual marriage, whether entered knowingly or unknowingly.
•Use scripture to break soul ties and spiritual covenants.
●Prayer and Fasting
•Engage in spiritual warfare through targeted prayers and possibly fasting.
•Use verses like Ephesians 6:12 and Colossians 2:15 during prayer.
●Plead the Blood of Jesus
•The blood of Jesus breaks every yoke.
•Declare that your body and soul are purchased by the blood (1 Cor. 6:19-20).
●Deliverance Ministry
•Seek help from a trusted,or a biblically grounded deliverance minister if necessary.
•Not everyone needs this, but persistent attacks may require it.
●Establish God's Covenant
•Fill your life with the word, prayer, and holy living.
•Replace the demonic claim with the truth: God is your husband (Isaiah 54:5).

Implications of Spirit spouses on personal relationships and spiritual wellbeing:
The implications of spirit spouses (also known as spirit husbands or wives) can be both deeply emotional and spiritually damaging, especially when viewed through a biblical and theological lens. While not explicitly mentioned in the Scripture, these experiences are often described in spiritual warfare or deliverance contexts and are believed to be demonic in nature.
🔥 Emotional & Psychological Impact
⚠️ Emotional Turmoil
•Victims often report feeling emotionally unstable, confused, or detached from reality after demonic sexual encounters (especially in dreams).
•The persistent presence of a spirit spouse can create mood swings, feelings of unworthiness, or guilt, especially when the person desires to live a holy life.
😔 Isolation and Loneliness
•These spirits may manipulate emotions, causing people to feel isolated even in community or relationships.
•They may reject healthy relationships without understanding why, often due to unseen spiritual interference.
💔 Disruption of Earthly Relationships
💥 Strained Marriages
•Spirit spouses often manifest through division, conflict, or sexual disinterest between married couples.
•Some report infertility, miscarriages, or repeated broken engagements — which are often attributed in deliverance ministries to spirit spouses acting out of jealousy or control.
❌ Blocking Relationship Formation
•Singles may find themselves perpetually unable to enter or maintain relationships.
•Some feel like there’s a spiritual “block” or constant interference that pushes people away, or causes suitors to mysteriously lose interest.
⚡Sexual & Physical Symptoms
😱 Sexual Dreams or Violations
•Many victims describe having regular sexual dreams, often waking up feeling as though it was real.
•Others feel physically touched, raped, or drained during sleep — common reports in spirit spouse cases.
💤 Fatigue & Loss of Vitality
•After spiritual encounters, people may feel spiritually and physically weak, unable to pray, read the word, or function normally.
🛐 Spiritual Implications
🚫 Defilement of the Temple (Body)
•1 Corinthians 6:19 says your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. A demonic entity operating in this space is a spiritual trespasser, violating your spiritual sanctity.
•Repeated spiritual violation can lead to spiritual stagnation, loss of hunger for God, or oppression.
🎯 Distraction from God's Purpose
•Spirit spouses may keep people distracted from fulfilling their spiritual callings, especially when relationships or inner healing are needed for ministry.
•They often introduce lust, addiction, or perversion to derail spiritual growth.
🙅‍♂️ False Covenants and Idolatry
•From a theological standpoint, forming (even unknowingly) a spiritual covenant with a demon is a form of spiritual adultery or idolatry — violating the command to love and serve only God (Exodus 20:3-5).
•Isaiah 54:5 reminds us that “your Maker is your Husband” — pointing to God as the only rightful covenant partner.
🧠 Mental and Emotional Strongholds
Long-term oppression can cause mental health issues such as:
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Intrusive sexual thoughts
• Paranoia (feeling watched or manipulated)
This reinforces the need for deliverance and mind renewal (Romans 12:2).

Views of Different Denominations:
•Pentecostal/Charismatic Churches: Often emphasize the existence of these spirits and believe in active deliverance practices to free individuals from their influence.
• Protestant Denominations: May regard these concepts as metaphorical, focusing instead on the psychological aspects of such experiences.
•Catholicism: Recognizes the potential for possession and spiritual interference but approaches it through sacramental and ritualistic means.

Testimony: My Experience with Spirit Spouses
I never thought I’d share this publicly, but silence felt heavier than the truth.
For years, I had strange dreams—repeated visits from a presence I couldn’t fully see but always felt. It began subtly in my early twenties: vivid dreams of intimacy, emotional connection, even jealousy. The “presence” was always there—sometimes tender, sometimes possessive. At first, I dismissed it as loneliness or suppressed desires. But as time passed, the dreams became more intense and frequent. Then it crossed into my waking life.Relationships started to fail inexplicably. Partners would often mention that they “felt like there was someone else” with me, though I was always faithful. Sleep became a torment—I would wake up exhausted, anxious, or filled with an emotion that didn’t belong to me. I didn’t feel alone at night, and not in a comforting way. I struggled with emotional isolation, despite being surrounded by people.I sought help from a therapist. At first, we explored possibilities like past trauma, attachment styles, or subconscious fears. But even the therapist admitted there was a pattern that didn’t fit neatly into psychology. Eventually, I turned to spiritual counsel. That’s when the term “spirit spouse” came up.
In certain spiritual traditions, a spirit spouse is believed to be a non-physical entity that forms a romantic or sexual bond with a person—often through dreams, rituals, or ancestral ties. For some, it’s a protective and loving relationship. But for others—like me—it can become possessive, draining, and even obstructive to real-world relationships and personal growth.Emotionally, it was like being in a relationship I hadn’t consented to. I felt loved, but trapped. Psychologically, it blurred the lines between fantasy and reality. I became withdrawn. My self-esteem took a hit because I couldn’t explain what was happening to me without sounding unstable.Spiritually, I felt torn. Was this being helping me or harming me? Some nights, I felt protected by its presence. Other nights, I’d wake up crying, feeling like I was being smothered by something invisible.Eventually, I went through a spiritual cleansing ritual—a process of respectfully asking the spirit to release its bond and allow me to live fully in the physical world. It wasn’t immediate, but over time, the dreams faded. I began to feel present in my own life again. Relationships became possible. My emotional state stabilized. What I’ve learned is this: whether spirit spouses are psychological projections, spiritual realities, or both—they are real in the sense that they impact lives deeply. They challenge the boundaries between the conscious and unconscious, the spiritual and psychological. If you are dealing with something similar, don’t suffer in silence. Seek support from both spiritual and mental health professionals.
There’s no shame in facing what lives in the unseen parts of your world.
