Sermon: Does the Bible Forbid Makeup and Jewelry?

Understanding Modesty, Inner Beauty, and Christian Living.

In today’s world, appearance is often treated as a measure of worth. Social media, fashion trends, and beauty standards constantly tell us how we should look in order to be accepted or admired. Even within the church, questions often arise: Is wearing makeup a sin? Is jewelry forbidden? How should Christians present themselves?
The Bible does not ignore these questions—but it addresses them differently than the world does. The scripture consistently shifts our attention from outward appearance to inward character. God is far more concerned with who we are becoming than what we are wearing.

What Scripture Teaches About Makeup and Jewelry
○Biblical Modesty
The Bible talks about modesty mainly as a matter of the heart and character, not just clothing.
The scripture emphasizes attitude and intention, not strict dress codes.
According to the Bible, modesty means:
• Valuing character over appearance.
• Choosing humility over self-promotion.
• Letting faith show through actions, not just looks.
• Biblical modesty is rooted in humility, self-control, and reverence for God.
• Modesty is not about drawing attention to self, but reflecting Christ.
• Modesty applies to behavior, speech, and lifestyle—not just appearance.
• Living in a way that reflects respect for God and others it’s not about shame, strict rules, or judging bodies. It’s about a heart that says, “I want my life—not just my image—to point to what really matters.”
Key Scriptures:
- 1 Timothy 2:9–10," In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing ,but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.."
In this passage, believers are encouraged to dress modestly and sensibly, not to draw attention through showy appearance or wealth. The key point isn’t banning certain clothes—it’s the priority:
• Don’t make appearance the main way you define yourself
• What matters more is being known for good works and a life that honors God
So biblically, modesty is about humility, self-control, and not using appearance to seek status, power, or attention.
- Micah 6:8,"And what does the Lord require of you but to justly, To love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God ?
This verse gives a simple summary of what God values:
• Do justice
• Love mercy
• Walk humbly with God
That last part—walking humbly—connects directly to modesty. Modesty is an outward expression of an inward humility. It’s about recognizing that your worth comes from God, not from how impressive you look to others.

○Adornment
The Bible addresses excess and pride, not simple adornment.
Adornment becomes a problem when it replaces devotion to God or feeds pride.
Key Scriptures:
- 1 Peter 3:3–4,"Do not let your adornment be merely outward- arranging the hair, wearing gold,or putting on fine apparel- rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God."
- Proverbs 31:30," Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. "
• The scripture warns against placing identity and value in outward beauty.
• Makeup and jewelry are not labeled as sins in themselves.
• The danger lies in pride, vanity, and dependency on appearance
• God values character, faith, and obedience above external beauty.

○Inner Beauty
What God sees matters more than what people see.
A transformed heart produces a life that reflects Christ naturally.
Key Scriptures:
- 1 Samuel 16:7," Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused Him. For the Lord does not see as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.."
- Galatians 5:22–23," But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, kindness, Longsuffering, goodness, and self-control.."
• God looks at the heart, not outward appearance.
• Inner beauty is developed through the fruit of the Spirit.
• A Christlike character shines brighter than physical beauty.
• Inner beauty is lasting; outward beauty fades.

○ Living to Please God, Not People
Christian living is about purpose, not performance.
Key Scriptures:
- Romans 12:1,"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God,that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God,which is your reasonable service.
• God is not against looking good.
• Looking neat, clean, and presentable is not sinful.
• Makeup and jewelry are not forbidden in the Bible.
• God is not anti-style—He is anti-pride

○The Real Danger is Identity
• When looks define your worth, you’re in danger.
• When you can’t feel confident without appearance, it becomes a problem.
• Your value comes from being created by God, not from likes or compliments.
• Pleasing God sometimes means resisting cultural pressure.
• Christian freedom comes with responsibility and wisdom.
• Our lives, including appearance—should point others to Christ.

○ A Mirror vs. a Window
A mirror reflects you. A window allows others to see through you.
When appearance becomes our focus, we live like mirrors—always checking how we look, how we are perceived, how we compare.
But when Christ is our focus, we become windows—people see Jesus through our words, attitude, humility, and love.
Question to reflect on:Does my life draw attention to me—or does it point people to Christ?

Conclusion
The Bible does not forbid makeup or jewelry, but it does call believers to something greater—a life marked by humility, holiness, and inner beauty. God’s desire is not to control our appearance, but to transform our hearts. When our hearts are right, our lives—including how we present ourselves—will naturally honor Him. True beauty is not found in what we put on, but in who we become in Christ.

2.Lord God,
Your Word reminds us that You look at the heart and not merely at outward appearance. Help us to understand that Your concern is not about makeup or jewelry themselves, but about the attitude of our hearts. Give us wisdom to live in a way that honors You—both outwardly and inwardly. Let Your truth guide our choices and our understanding. In Jesus' name, Amen.

3.Father,
Create in us hearts that are gentle, humble, and focused on pleasing You. Guard us from placing our value in external beauty or material things. Teach us to cultivate inner beauty—faith, kindness, modesty, and love—so that our lives reflect Christ wherever we go. May our appearance never distract from Your glory, but always point others to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

4.Lord,
Forgive us for the times we have judged others based on appearance or felt spiritually superior because of outward choices. Remove pride from our hearts and replace it with compassion and grace. Help us to encourage one another in righteousness, and not criticize or condemn. Teach us to walk in love, just as Christ loves us. In Jesus' name,Amen.

5.Gracious God,
Thank You for the freedom we have in Christ. Help us to use that freedom wisely—not to please ourselves, but to honor You. Give us balance, self-control, and discernment in how we present ourselves. May everything we do be done for Your glory and not for vanity or attention. In Jesus' name,Amen.
