Sermon: The Trinity: One God in Three Persons
"I Believe in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit”
Key Texts: Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Deuteronomy 6:4
The Foundation of Our Faith
In the scriptures, God reveals Himself as one God who eternally exists in three distinct Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The Father plans and sends, the Son redeems and reveals, and the Holy Spirit applies and sustains. Our salvation itself is Trinitarian in nature—conceived by the Father, accomplished by the Son, and brought to life in us by the Spirit.
The Trinity is a divine mystery to be confessed, received, and worshiped. While we may not fully comprehend it, we can truly know and trust the God who has revealed Himself in this way.
The Trinity shapes every part of the Christian life. Our worship is directed to the Father, through the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Our prayers, our understanding of salvation, and our daily walk with God are all grounded in this Trinitarian reality.
The Oneness of God
Scripture is clear and unwavering in its affirmation that there is only one true God.
Deuteronomy 6:4 declares, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one”.
God is eternal—without beginning or end—unchanging in His nature and purposes, and sovereign over all creation. He is not dependent on anything outside Himself, nor is He subject to change or limitation. God’s oneness speaks to the unity of His essence, will, power, and glory.
Importantly, the unity of God does not contradict the doctrine of the Trinity; rather, it supports it. The Trinity does not divide God into parts or suggest three gods. Instead, it affirms that the one divine essence is fully shared by the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God is one in being, even as He is three in persons.
Thus, the Christian confession of the Trinity upholds the oneness of God while faithfully reflecting the fullness of His self-revelation in Scripture.
God the Father: Our creator and the source of all things
• The Father is the Creator of heaven and earth.
• He is holy and sovereign, marked by perfect love.
• We trust Him as our provider, protector, and the planner of redemption.
• He is the Sustainer of all life.
• He lovingly fulfills the role of Father, provider, and rightful authority.
• From the beginning, the Father has sovereignly planned redemption.
God the Son: Our Savior and Redeemer
• Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man.
• Through His incarnation, atoning death, and victorious resurrection, salvation is accomplished.
• His life, death, and resurrection stand at the center of God’s redemptive work.
• Through the Son, we receive forgiveness, reconciliation, and eternal life.
• Through Him, we come to know the Father and share in eternal life (John 1:1, 14).
God the Holy Spirit: Our Helper and Sustainer
• The Holy Spirit is the abiding presence of God within believers.
• He works in conviction, regeneration, sanctification, and spiritual empowerment.
• As Comforter, Teacher, and Guide, the Spirit leads believers into truth.
• He equips the Church with spiritual gifts and produces Christlike fruit.
• The Spirit empowers believers for holy living and faithful service.
The Unity and Work of the Trinity in Our Lives
• Three distinct Persons, yet perfectly one in essence and purpose.
• The Father plans salvation, the Son accomplishes it, and the Spirit applies it.
• Our response is worship, obedience, and faithful witness.
• Distinct in Person, equal in essence, and united in purpose.
• The Trinity works together in creation, redemption, and the daily life of the believer.
Our Response to the Triune God
Right doctrine always calls for a right response. The revelation of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is not given merely to inform our minds, but to shape our lives. When we truly grasp who God is, our hearts and actions are transformed.
First, we are called to worship God in spirit and in truth. Our worship is directed to the Father, made possible through the Son, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. True worship flows from a right understanding of the Triune God and expresses itself in reverence, joy, and wholehearted devotion.
Second, we live in obedience and gratitude for God’s saving work. The Father has graciously planned our redemption, the Son has accomplished it through His life, death, and resurrection, and the Holy Spirit applies it to our hearts. Gratitude for such grace compels us to walk in obedience—not to earn salvation, but as a joyful response to it.
Finally, we are called to reflect the love and unity of the Trinity in our relationships. Just as the Father, Son, and Spirit exist in perfect harmony and self-giving love, we are called to pursue unity, humility, and sacrificial love within the body of Christ and in the world. In this way, our lives bear witness to the God we confess.
Conclusion: Living in the Reality of the Trinity
• The doctrine of the Trinity reminds us that God is greater than our understanding.
• The Trinity is a mystery to be revered, not fully explained.
• We leave committed to honoring the Father, following the Son, and walking in the Spirit.
• While we may never fully explain how God is one in essence and three in persons, we are called to faithfully confess what Scripture reveals.
• Our faith is strengthened as we trust the God who reveals Himself.
• The Triune God is not distant or abstract—He is personal, relational, and actively involved in our salvation and daily lives.
• As we grow in knowing Him, we grow in confidence, humility, and worship.
• Therefore, we leave committed to living in the reality of the Trinity: honoring the Father in worship and obedience, following the Son in faith and discipleship, and walking daily in dependence on the Holy Spirit. This is not merely doctrine to be believed, but truth to be lived—for the glory of God and the joy of His people.
